ARTROCKER RATING:

If it's tantrums you want, it's tantrums you'll get. Early on this record, singer Megan Thomas descends into a moaning match, yelling "I wanna Talk!" like a spoilt brat, while a mature second voice replies: "Not yet, not yet." Ahhh brattishness. It's an endearing blend of naivety, ambition and hyperactivity - and it suits this group well. But if you're expecting snot tears and emotional trauma, look away now: Megan is a Menace, and like all the best menaces, she's a lively advert for chaos.

the band are never less than energetically seeking out new ways to run rings around the listener...

The brattiness doesn’t end there: during ‘Zig A Zag’, Megan starts to get really lippy. She instructs us not to "bovva", because we’re just lazy old hags that should be grateful to be in her superior company. She said what? Why… the goddamn! As usual, what stops the listener from throttling Megan is her silly, blase charm. A highlight on the record, ‘Zig A Zag’ sees the lass in full on cheeky mode, while Egyptian guitars go into overdrive behind her. They may act like kids, but this posse are grown up enough to make unpredictable pop music. In other words, 10/10 for the attitude, even if the songs sometimes wobble a bit in their consistency. Just to elaborate on that, ‘Blase’ is fun but forgettable, and although ‘Why The English Are Rubbish’ sounds like it couldn’t give a fuck, it could give a fuck about having some stronger hooks. But enough cruelty! Songs like ‘Swan Lake’ manage to introduce some soul into the equation, and the band are never less than energetically seeking out new ways to run rings around the listener with their relentless mischief.
